It's Football Season! Now What?

By Karolyn Castaldo on September 13, 2012

If you’re like me, then come Fall, your usually attentive and sweet boyfriend seems a bit…distracted. He’s constantly checking his smartphone, changing the channel between your normal TV shows and the game or Sports Center, or texting his guy friends with smack talk.  But worry not, ladies; he’s not cheating, he’s not leaving you. It’s football season and he’s married to the game.

So, what do you do when he has football on the brain nearly 24/7? If you’re not a killer football fan, joining in on his fantasy league and cheering on your team every chance you get, you’ll need to keep yourself busy until after the Super Bowl!

1. Find a good book

If you can read with a lot of noise, do it on game day. While the boys are hooting and hollering about every little play, dive into the book of your choice. If you want to stay in on the conversation and social time with them, make it a magazine that requires a little less attention. But really, they won’t notice if you aren’t paying attention, so just choose whichever you’ll find most interesting.

2. Learn some new recipes

What better a time to try out a new recipe than when you have a lot of hungry men over? Your guy’s friends will just be happy that they have something to munch on while pounding beer and being total sports-meatheads. Make sure that you are trying out more snack-like finger foods rather than full-blown meals, though! However, as soon as the first “woman in the kitchen” joke is made, it’s time to get out, and tell them that they’re in charge of food for the next game.

3. Take up a hobby

Take the opportunity to get out and enjoy a new non-couple hobby during football season! Let your boyfriend have “man time” and get out with your girls, or just go solo. If you’ve always wanted to take a painting class, yoga, self-defense, knitting, scuba-diving, or any other crazy activity, go give it a try. You’ll be learning something new and having so much fun that you won’t even notice he hasn’t texted you since the game started!

4. Go shopping

How many times has he groaned when you asked him to go shopping with you? Not only are football games obnoxiously long, providing hours of endless shopping, but some of the cutest styles are available in stores during the fall and winter! Summer clothes are on clearance, new fall fashions are arriving and the cold-weather winter clothing will be there soon! You could finish all of your holiday shopping before the holidays even begin.

5. Do your homework

As we are college students, take the uninterrupted time to do your homework. If you are constantly being bombarded by texts or calls, or seem to have less time for your relationship because of school, using the time that you wouldn’t spend together anyway to get your work done will give you time when the game is off to spend with him. Suggest that he multitasks while the game is on so that you guys can hang out after as well!

6. Learn to love it

As the age-old saying goes, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. You may find that if you sit down to watch the game with your guy one-on-one, you may end up loving it just as much as he does. Maybe someone has never explained the rules to you or maybe you just never really had the patience for it. Either way, give it a chance. If you expect your relationship will last, football will always be there too! There’s also some pretty cute NFL apparel (underwear included) for girls now, so take advantage and surprise your guy with your “team spirit.”

Good luck and happy football season!
